Community Healing and Celebration

Recently our windows were shot and shattered on two occasions with what appeared to be a metal pellet. Similar shots were fired three times to our neighboring business, Hercules Records. These incidents took place following Republican and Pro-Trump rallies at UC Berkeley. We have strong reason to believe that these were hate-related crimes targeted at our justice posters, specifically our Black Lives Matter poster, which Hercules Records also displays. These violations have brought up a lot of turmoil for members of the collective, as many of our members are workers of color. These incidents have propelled our existing conversations around ethical, cop-free security as we want to protect our space in a manner that aligns with our values and avoids involving the police.

In these times of state violence and great injustice, we invite you to join us for a Community Healing & Celebration Circle. We will have:
- Food & drink to share
- Teachings on non-oppressive safety strategies
- Freedom songs/ community healers
- Sacred ritual to protect our space

Friends in our community created a fund to help cover the cost of our new windows. Please consider donating! https://www.generosity.com/community-fundraising/alchemy-collective-cafe-window-repair/x/16649797

Tapestry of Being (Mixed Heritage Support Group)

June 23rd 6:30-8:30pm will be the first of the monthly creative healing & support gathering for multi-racial/ mixed heritage/ mixed race individuals. •••
How does it feel to have relatives that have historically been mortal enemies? What is the experience of being the only one in your family who looks like you? What does it mean when one half of your ancestry oppressed the other? What does it feel like to be suspended between worlds? •••
•••The path of a "born between" identity is rather distinct, tho historically underrepresented in literature or media. To be born with parents of different cultural/ethnic backgrounds, to be born in one land & raised in another with different traditions, to be adopted by parents of a different race, etc, puts us on a search of self that is all at once unique & alienating, beautiful & heartbreaking. •••
••• The effect of underrepresented narratives thru the eyes of the multi-racial/mixed heritage individual is massive misunderstanding from the world at large. In a society so conditioned to categorize life, many are disturbed & frustrated when they cannot categorize you upon first glance, leading to damaging pressure to deny, distort, & sever your connection from the ancestral truths carried in your very blood. •••
••• Ultimately, when there are little to no stories available of how our particular genetic & cultural identities are experienced, it becomes our responsibility to understand & create those narratives. We have the right to claim our identities by our own, rather than society's, terms. •••
••• In this gathering we will hold group therapy safe space to talk, share, & creatively workshop the multi-racial/mixed heritage experience thru discussion, story telling, various forms of artistic exercises, & compilation of resources & support as we learn how to elevate our individual & collective voices within this path.

Mixed Up Zine Launch Party

From 7-9pm on Sept 29th, the editors of Mixed Race Queer and Feminist Zine will celebrate the debut of the finished 2nd edition - "What Brings You to the Table?" - via a free Launch Party at Alchemy Cafe in Oakland! There is *very* limited seating, so plan to get there by 6:30pm! (accessibility notes below)

This 2nd issue of Mixed Up! focuses on the ways mixed-race, queer people relate to food, the recipes of their heritage, memories of family meals or lack thereof. We received many interesting submissions, and the party will feature live readings from + discussion with a few of our local, Bay Area contributing artists! Bring cash cuz we'll be passing a hat to give back to our performers.

Spaces for folx of mixed heritage to talk about our varied, underrepresented experiences are rare, and even more so the more intersections mixed-race folx embody. We seek to change that by compiling and elevating more voices in print and live creative, healing, community gatherings.

There will be color + b&w copies of the zine for sale (CASH ONLY, $3-15 sliding). And we're opening space for other zine authors to sell their work (priority goes to lgbtqia / poc / crip zinesters)! If interested, email mrfqzine@gmail.com. Alsoooo if you are interested in helping out with the event by volunteering, email mrfqzine@gmail.com. More updates coming soon...

Love your Mixed Up editors,

Caro, Christina + Emiliano

First Tuesday Art Opening: Jody Medich

Artist Statement:

I am drawn to marks, and the act of mark making. Humans are always leaving marks.

I am interested in narratives. Explicit and implied. Humans are always telling stories.

I believe in the craft of making. I am from a Mid-western, Blue Collar world. The skill of making is an almost primal requirement.

These three values are always present in my work in a diverse landscape of mediums and contexts. They are the constant.
